A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel bursts. Some strokes occur suddenly — but in certain cases, warning symptoms (often called a TIA or “mini-stroke”) can happen days before a major stroke.
A TIA (transient ischemic attack) is a medical emergency and should never be ignored.
Here are 9 early warning signs of stroke, including symptoms that may appear hours or even days beforehand:
🚨 1️⃣ Sudden Numbness or Weakness (Especially One Side)
- Face drooping
- Arm weakness
- Leg weakness
- One side of the body feels numb
This is one of the most classic warning signs.
🗣 2️⃣ Trouble Speaking or Slurred Speech
- Difficulty forming words
- Confusion
- Trouble understanding speech
If someone suddenly can’t speak clearly, act immediately.
👁 3️⃣ Sudden Vision Problems
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Loss of vision in one or both eyes
🤯 4️⃣ Severe, Unexplained Headache
A sudden, intense headache (“worst headache of your life”) may indicate a hemorrhagic stroke.
🚶 5️⃣ Dizziness or Loss of Balance
- Sudden trouble walking
- Loss of coordination
- Feeling like the room is spinning
😵 6️⃣ Sudden Confusion
Difficulty understanding simple instructions or sudden mental fog can be a warning sign.
💪 7️⃣ Sudden Clumsiness or Hand Weakness
Dropping objects or inability to grip properly may occur days before a larger event in some cases.
💓 8️⃣ Brief Episodes of Symptoms That Go Away (TIA)
Symptoms that:
- Last a few minutes
- Resolve within an hour
- Then completely disappear
⚠️ This is NOT harmless. It’s often a major warning sign of a full stroke within days.
😴 9️⃣ Unusual Fatigue or Malaise (Less Specific)
Some people report feeling “off,” unusually tired, or unwell in the days before a stroke — though this is less specific and can be caused by many conditions.
🧠 Remember FAST
Use the FAST test:
- F – Face drooping
- A – Arm weakness
- S – Speech difficulty
- T – Time to call emergency services
🚑 When to Seek Immediate Help
Call emergency services immediately if you notice:
- Sudden weakness or numbness
- Speech problems
- Vision loss
- Severe headache
- Loss of balance
Even if symptoms go away, seek emergency care.
Important Note
Not every stroke gives a 1-week warning. Many happen suddenly without prior symptoms. But a TIA can occur days before a major stroke — and early treatment can prevent a life-threatening event.
