Here’s a simple, effective way to clean dirty bed pillows so they come out white, fresh, and sweet-smelling 🛏️✨
(Works for most cotton, down, and polyester pillows—memory foam is different, see note below.)
What you’ll need
- Mild laundry detergent
- Baking soda
- White vinegar
- Hot water
- Dryer balls or clean tennis balls (optional but great)
Step-by-step: washing pillows
1. Check the label first
Most pillows are machine-washable, but always confirm the care tag.
2. Pre-treat stains (important!)
For yellow or greasy spots:
- Mix baking soda + a little water into a paste
- Gently scrub stains and let sit 30–60 minutes
3. Load the washer correctly
- Wash two pillows at once to keep the machine balanced
- Use hot water (if allowed by the label)
4. Add your cleaners
- Normal amount of detergent
- ½ cup baking soda (whitens + deodorizes)
- ½ cup white vinegar (add to fabric softener compartment or during rinse)
5. Extra rinse
Run an extra rinse cycle to remove all soap residue (key for softness and smell).
Drying for fluffy, sweet pillows
- Dry on low to medium heat
- Add dryer balls or tennis balls to prevent clumping
- Pause midway and fluff by hand
- Make sure pillows are 100% dry (even slight dampness = mildew smell)
👉 Tip: Finish by air-drying in sunlight if possible—natural deodorizer + brightener.
How often to wash pillows
- Every 3–6 months
- Use pillow protectors to keep them clean longer
Important exceptions
❌ Memory foam or latex pillows
- Do not machine wash
- Spot clean with mild detergent
- Air dry completely
If you want, tell me:
- what type of pillow you have
- how yellow or smelly they are 😅
I can tailor the method (or tell you honestly if it’s time to replace them).
