My nana’s method focuses on softening the nail first and then gently caring for it to make it look smoother and thinner.
What You Need

Step-by-Step Method
1. Soak Your Feet
Fill a bowl or basin with warm water and add baking soda or mild soap. Soak your feet for about 15–20 minutes. This helps soften the nails and the surrounding skin.
2. Dry Your Feet Well
After soaking, gently dry your feet with a clean towel. Make sure the area between the toes is completely dry.
3. Carefully Trim the Nails
Use clean nail clippers to trim the toenails straight across. Thick nails are easier to cut after soaking.
4. Gently File the Nail Surface
Use a nail file or pumice stone to lightly file the top of the nail. This can help reduce thickness and smooth the surface. Be gentle to avoid damaging the nail.
5. Moisturize the Nails
Apply a small amount of moisturizing oil or cream to the nails and surrounding skin. This helps keep the nails flexible and prevents dryness.
How Often to Do It
This routine can be done once or twice a week to gradually improve the appearance of thick toenails.
